Extension

Extension is really how the arms swing around the body.  In the next section, you will learn how the body rotates with the arms, they kind of work together as a team.   One could not exist without the other.  The purpose of extension is to drive the ball into the ground.  To do this you must learn how to extend your arms properly.  There are three things that make us hit down on the ball.

Hips 40 degrees open
More weight on left foot than right
Hands in front of the ball.

In this section, we will deal with the hands in front of the ball at impact.

There are six stages of extension.

  1. Take-away
  2. Lift
  3. Drop
  4. Impact
  5. Follow-through
  6. Finish
The Take-away starts with a shoulder turn.  Nothing other than the shoulders should move.

From here the arms Lift as the shoulders continue to turn, leave the left foot on the ground.

From the top, the arms simply Drop as the hips turn forward.

Continue to turn the hips and drive the ball into the ground.

Notice how the hands are in front of the ball at Impact.

The arms then continue to extend toward the target, Follow-through.

The golf swing is really over at the Follow-through, but you should Finish the swing anyway.

Keep the hands high, it's a good sign of the proper Follow-through.

Watch out for some common errors:

Too much backswing.

Way too much backswing.

This is why you do not scoop the ball into the air, you should crash it into the ground!

Scooping creates the  dreaded double chicken wing!
